I don't need streaming, movies or TV. YouTube, low cost internet and the radio are good enough for me.

A while ago, I found an article about HD TV from an antenna. The person had cut the cord to streaming services like Netflix. He thought he could go off the grid back to on air TV. Problem was, most of the broadcast content wasn't that good either. He decided the best answer was just YouTube videos.

That's like me. I've never been into drama movies, sports, or flashy "shoot em up" things. I don't need high definition "supersized" screens in my studio apartment.

A low cost internet connection is enough for me. There are plenty of websites like YouTube. I especially like educational documentaries. I haven't read many books either, but I do remember the book 1984 with Big Brother on that wall sized TV.

I am fascinated with old style radio, or TV waves that travel across the landscape, like adventurous travelers, arriving at my receiver. I could get an HD TV antenna, but those signals don't reach me anyway; my studio apartment is on the wrong side of a concrete building for signals from any TV stations.

As a child, I listened to the radio much more than watching TV. The drama and commercialism, of TV, bored me; not to mention the lack of choices. Back then, we only had 3 channels.

I take that back. Growing up in Pullman, WA, we had 3 commercial networks out of Spokane and educational TV on KWSU in Pullman. We later got redundancy with KUID TV from Moscow, ID. It was full of ghosts as our antenna was pointed the wrong way. By my high school years, we also got KSPS PBS, from Spokane.

I preferred the radio with it's many choices. Nighttime ionospheric skip got me stations from all over the US, Canada and Mexico; not to mention shortwave radio bringing in the world.

Now I am plenty happy with my radio and my low cost internet connection. I don't need streaming services, most movies or big screen TV. It's like the old phrase "bread and circuses."

By the way, speaking of redundancy, KWSU TV is no longer broadcasting. The WSU radio service, Northwest Public Broadcasting, is still going strong with repeaters even here in Bellingham.
